Georges Island National Historic Site

Overview

Georges Island features multiple outdoor event spaces, which are suitable for a wide variety of capacities and event styles. The largest of the spaces being the Parade Square within Fort Charlotte. This open grassy area has the capacity for large-scale events of up to 2500-3000 people. Also, there is the Married Officers’ Quarters Landing, which provides an excellent location for mid-size events and is closer to the dock. These multi-purpose outdoor areas provide a flexible canvas for ceremonies, performances, receptions, etc. Event hosts can further enhance their island rental by booking an island and/or tunnel tour, led by a costumed interpreter who brings the site’s rich military and cultural history to life for guests.

With Georges Island being located in the middle of Halifax Harbour, infrastructure for events is limited. There is no permanent power on the island, only two small indoor spaces (the coal shed by the dock and the RA storage room within Fort Charlotte), and two composting toilets located near the dock. As a result, all aspects of an event must be brought to the island by the event host. Georges Island operates as a pack-in, pack-out venue, meaning all event supplies—and all waste—must be transported to and from the island. While this requires advanced planning and experienced execution, it also offers planners complete creative control and the opportunity to deliver a highly customized event in a rare and memorable setting.
