Impactful Experience
Historic Canadian Immigration Experience
Offered by: The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21
Overview
The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 where nearly one million immigrants landed in Canada from 1928 to 1971, shares the ongoing story of immigration to Canada—past to present and coast to coast. Located at the Halifax seaport, within walking distance to many downtown hotels and the Halifax Convention Centre. Your guests can immerse themselves in regional and national history, learning about the courage, hope, hardship, and resilience at the heart of the immigrant experience. Discover the highs and lows in Canada’s history of welcoming and integrating newcomers.
How it works
‘Immigration Simulation’ is a thought-provoking and interactive role-playing experience. Led by experienced Heritage Interpreters, the program recreates the historic immigration process with authenticity and care. Participants will encounter real-life policies – including the racist and exclusionary policies that were put in place by the Canadian government at the time. These scenarios challenge visitors to navigate difficult choices, reflect on ethical considerations, and better understand how government decisions impact individuals and communities. These policies directly affected the lives of real people, determining who was allowed into Canada and how they were treated. Some participants may find personal connections to the stories highlighted. The Museum team guides this experience with sensitivity, compassion, and expertise.
Set in the authentic national historic site, this powerful learning and team-building experience consistently delivers both emotional impact and cultural insight. It is a meaningful way for meeting, convention and event delegates to connect with history and each other.
