How to Plan an Event in Halifax: Advice from Element Event Solutions

There are also operational considerations like how many plates, chairs, pieces of cutlery, etc. you might need to have on hand. What about waste removal and washrooms? Transportation to and from the event? Weather contingencies? The list goes on.

Navigating Historic Venues
Halifax offers iconic venue spaces like Citadel Hill National Historic Site and George’s Island. Hosting in these locations can make for stunning events, but historic venues aren’t always built to meet the needs of today’s events industry. Narrow tunnels, smaller elevators, and uneven ground can mean getting strategic about the logistics you might otherwise take for granted. It’s important to understand how much you’ll be bringing into the space and identifying the most effective way to do that, and keep in mind that smaller vehicles, forklifts, carts, or even pure people-power may be required to get everything to its final destination. .

Hosting in Public Spaces
One of Halifax’s most popular attractions, the Halifax Waterfront, can be used as a venue with some imagination and the right prep. Some things to consider would be:
Lead time: Coordinating events in public spaces takes more time and requires multiple approvals to acquire the proper permits, site plan, permissions, and insurance. Make sure you build in enough time in your prep schedule to accommodate the admin side of things.
Weather: Sun, wind, rain—Halifax can have it all, sometimes in the same day. Ensure you have proper tenting for the weather and season, including the proper egress on all sides, to keep guests comfortable.
Fire department clearance: Safety is always a top priority. This includes understanding and meeting fire department and engineering requirements and building in time to receive the proper approvals.

Traditional Event Venues
Venues like the Halifax Convention Centre and Pavilion 23 are tailor-made for hosting, but making your event feel unique may require some additional work.
