Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness National Conference

2023

When the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness (CAEH) National Conference came to the Halifax Convention Centre in November 2023, it became more than just a gathering of national and international voices to end homelessness. It was a chance to shine a light on the housing and homelessness challenges in our own backyard and bring attention to collaborative efforts toward solutions in our own region. More than 1,600 attendees experienced productive conversations around the use of data to solve homelessness, balancing dignity-driven policies and programs with unintended economic impacts, and shelter and housing initiatives from different perspectives, like youth, gender-sensitive programs, and rural and remote communities.

The atmosphere at the conference reflected Halifax’s character—laid-back, welcoming, and intentional about creating safe and restorative spaces. From fitness breaks and cultural activities, to collaborative art projects, to a smudge room and a welcoming hangout room for guests with lived-experience of homelessness (stocked with snacks and toiletries); the conference balanced the weight of difficult discussions with moments of care and connection.

Role of the Host Committee

The Host Committee was at the heart of making this balance possible. They worked hard to ensure the event reflected the diversity and generosity of the region, opening doors for communities who might otherwise have been left out. From organizing transportation and arranging sponsored funding streams, to filling panels and arranging media opportunities, the committee’s impact could be felt in every detail. Their thoughtful approach broke down barriers, gave a voice to marginalized groups, and created an inclusive atmosphere that allowed meaningful conversations to flourish. In doing so, they not only contributed to the success of the conference itself but also sparked new partnerships, projects, and awareness that continue to ripple through our city.
